(25 July, 2003) – On Thursday, CBS's The Early Show featured American
Standard's new high efficiency Allegiance® 18 air conditioning unit. In the segment, Danny
Lipford, host of "Today's Homeowner," spoke with Early Show host Harry Smith about keeping
cool in hot weather. They looked at different brands of window and wall air conditioning
units, but the Allegiance® 18 was the only featured central air conditioning unit.
Lipford explained that the Allegiance® 18 is "almost twice as efficient as others," because of
its SEER rating of 18. SEER is the seasonal energy efficiency ratio, which the federal
government mandates should be at least 10.
Lipford explained to viewers that the Allegiance® 18 maintains such a high efficiency because
of its two compressors. "One larger than the other," he said. "The theory is when you turn on
your thermostat for air conditioning, this cools your house quickly. Then the larger one will
kick off, and the smaller one will continue to maintain it and attain the efficiency level on
this American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning unit that's just unbelievable."
