All kinds of products are ENERGY STAR®-rated, from kitchen appliances to electronics to computers to HVAC equipment. To earn the ENERGY STAR® label, products must meet or exceed specific energy efficiency requirements. Products with ENERGY STAR® certification can provide long-term savings.
According to their website, ENERGY STAR®-qualified furnaces can be up to 15% more efficient than standard models. ENERGY STAR®-qualified cooling equipment can be up to 8% more efficient than minimum-standard equipment.
In addition, purchasing an ENERGY-STAR®-qualified HVAC system may qualify you for federal energy tax credits of up to $2,000 on a heat pump system or a total of $1,200 for a new AC + furnace system. You may also be eligible for local, utility, and ENERGY STAR® rebates.

HSPF measures the efficiency of a heat pump over an entire heating season. The higher the HSPF, the more efficient the heat pump.
SEER measures the efficiency of a heat pump or air conditioner over an entire cooling season. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the system.
AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, measures how efficiently a gas furnace converts fuel to energy. The higher the AFUE, the more efficient the gas furnace.
