Smart Thermostat

By Anne Fonda

A smart thermostat, or Wi-Fi thermostat, is a programmable thermostat with multiple smart features that add convenience and enhanced comfort to your life. It connects to the internet, which allows you to control it from an app, your tablet, or your laptop.

Your thermostat controls your heating and cooling system, but it can also control the humidity, indoor air quality, and smart home devices.

Smart thermostat benefits

Many, but not all smart thermostats have these basic features:

  • Programmability and learning capability (in some models)
  • Reduction in energy consumption
  • Remote access via an app
  • Compatible with voice assistants
  • Geofencing to heat and cool your home to your set temperature preferences as you approach home
  • Integration with smart home devices
  • Upgradable software

However, it’s important to know that not all smart thermostats are compatible with all HVAC systems. A heat pump system, variable-speed system, or zoning system might not be compatible with a basic smart thermostat, for instance.

Your HVAC company can help you find the best smart thermostat for your home and budget.

How much can you reduce energy consumption with a smart thermostat?

It’s hard to say how much you could decrease your electricity usage or decrease natural gas usage because every home and every homeowner’s usage patterns are different.

If you use the recommended temperature settings for summer and winter and raise or reduce the temperature while you’re away from home, you can reduce energy consumption and maximize savings on your energy bills. According to ENERGY STAR®, homeowners in areas with extremely hot or cold temperatures could save up to $100 a year.

Why choose an American Standard smart thermostat?

We realize you can order a smart thermostat online or buy one at your local big box store. But those thermostats don’t have all of the capabilities that an American Standard smart thermostat does.

Some of our smart thermostats are only compatible with an American Standard Link system, while others (the Gold 824 and Silver 724) are compatible with any brand HVAC system. Learn more about how to choose the best thermostat for your home.

In addition, our warranties are outstanding. While other brands mostly have a standard warranty of 1-3 years, American Standard smart thermostats come with a 10-year registered warranty (5 for the 724) if installed by an American Standard professional and you or your dealer register it within 60 days of installation. Even our base limited warranty is better - generally 5 years. (1 year for the 724).

American Standard Diagnostics

With an American Standard smart thermostat, you can also opt into American Standard Diagnostics. Similar to the way a security company monitors your security system, American Standard Diagnostics gives your dealer remote monitoring access of your HVAC system when you set it up in the American Standard Home App.

Your dealer gets notified when it’s time for maintenance or if there is an issue with your system. Remote monitoring allows them to catch a problem while it’s still small, even while you’re on vacation.

Dealer remote access

If they identify a problem, they may be able to fix the problem remotely if you grant them one-time dealer remote access. If they cannot solve it remotely, they will schedule an onsite visit. The HVAC technician will arrive with everything necessary to fix your system, armed with the troubleshooting knowledge gained through remote access.

This saves you and the dealer time and money. Mass-market smart thermostats can’t say the same.
