HVAC Repair Resource Guide for Homeowners

By Anne Fonda

Your HVAC system is something that’s out of sight, out of mind. When your furnace stops heating or your air conditioner is blowing hot air instead of cold, you need to figure out what’s going on, and fix it, fast.

While our HVAC troubleshooting tips may help if the problem is something simple like a dirty filter or a wrong thermostat setting, you may need to schedule professional HVAC repair. We’ve pulled together some resources to help you navigate the process and have an idea of what to expect.

We’ll cover the following.

General HVAC Repair

If your system is less than 10 years old, it may be under warranty, which can help reduce your repair costs. In general, if it’s more than 10 years old, most parts will no longer be covered. Depending on the issue, you may need to decide if repair or replacement is the more cost-effective option. If you’re new to the area, you may also need help finding the right HVAC company to hire.

The resources below can help you make informed decisions.

Refrigerant is what enables your air conditioner to cool your home and allows a heat pump to both heat and cool your home. Understanding HVAC refrigerants and how a refrigerant leak can impact your overall repair costs is important. Older refrigerants are no longer being manufactured. Inventories and the cost of older refrigerants and replacement coils will vary by market.

What the experts say

“Have a repair vs replace conversation with your dealer/contractor.  Beware of dealers who may push you to replace your system unnecessarily.  We recommend talking to an American Standard Customer Care dealer to be sure you get the best advice.”

-Mark Woodruff, Senior Product Manager, Air Conditioners

Air conditioner repair

Central air conditioning can feel blissful in the Texas heat or a sweltering Florida afternoon. Whether you run your air conditioning nearly year-round or only for a few months in the summer, when it’s hot outside, you need it to work. Below, we’ve pulled together some AC repair resources for you.

Heat pump repair

Your heat pump works hard year-round to heat and cool your home. While regular HVAC maintenance can help keep your system running smoothly, eventually, all mechanical systems need repairs. Below are a few resources to help you understand when you might need heat pump repair.

Furnace Repair

If you live in an area with colder winters, chances are good that you use a furnace to heat your home, or pair it with a heat pump for a dual-fuel system. While gas furnaces can be real workhorses, lasting 20+ years, eventually a part will wear out or break. Learn some furnace repair basics and then call for help.

Ductwork and ventilation

When everything is working right, your HVAC system’s ductwork carries heated or cooled air throughout your home, distributing it through supply vents and registers. The return vents and ducts send the air back to your indoor air handler, and the process starts all over again.

However, leaky ductwork or improperly sized ductwork can cause problems. Learn more in these blogs.

What the experts say

“Good maintenance is always the best way to extend the life of your system and have the highest level of overall reliability.  In addition, repairing small problems over time can prevent bigger issues later.”

-Mark Woodruff, Senior Product Manager, Ducted Outdoor
